In 1946 Wilbur Rubottom was a master wood carver in Los Angeles with a young family. The war had ended and he needed to find a way to make a living. In true American entrepreneurial fashion, he borrowed $1000 from his dad and started a cabinet company in his garage.

He not only built the cabinets, he made the machines he used to make the cabinets. We still have one of the machines he built in use to this day, an ingenious (if rather noisy) vertical belt sander. The first machine he built was a table saw, and with that W.L. Rubottom Company was born and in full swing.

The timing of W.L. Rubottom Company’s creation was impeccable in Southern California. The 1950s residential construction boom was in full swing, and there was a huge need for homes and the accoutrements of residential and custom home construction. Wilbur thought his company was situated in the perfect spot in Los Angeles, until he was invited to bid on a construction project in the seaside town of Ventura, CA. As we say in the business when you’re not sure you want to take on a job he “threw some money at it” and they accepted the bid. He drove his bob-tail truck up to Ventura and thought if that was the going rate, and the weather is truly always 72 and sunny (it is), then it’s not a bad spot for a bigger shop. So he moved the family to Ventura, and we’ve been here ever since, supplying Los Angeles County, Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, San Luis Obispo County, and Kern County with custom and production residential cabinets.
